About 40 children from Nazareth Children's Home were treated to a day of fishing and more Saturday courtesy of the Salisbury Elks Lodge.

For the seventh consecutive year, the Elks hosted an event for the children at High Rock Lake.

Saturday's get-together offered residents of the Children's Home the opportunity to cast fishing rods, take boat rides, participate in fun and games and generally enjoy themselves on a hot summer day.

Mike Jones, secretary of the Elks Lodge, said about 15 club members volunteered their time to the event. He said four of those club members brought boats to the lake, offering rides to residents of the Children's Home.

Jones said that while the boat rides proved a hit, some of the children wanted to do nothing but fish.

"Mostly, they like the fishing," he said. "We had to pry some of 'em away just to get 'em to come eat."

Jones said the weather and the turnout for the event couldn't have been better. Saturday's weather was warm and hazy -- a typical early summer day.

Each child was presented a gift bag that included items such as T-shirts and hats.

Jones said part of the day's fun also included a variety of games. A water balloon toss was one of those activities.

Another was a marshmallow race where each participant put a marshmallow on a spoon, then hustled to their teammate without dropping the treat.

From there, participants had to figure out a way to get the marshmallow to their partner's spoon without using their hands.

"It was a lot of fun to watch," Jones said.
