Finding the perfect prom dress
By PATRICK FRAWLEY

Not to spoil the surprise of the evening, but Charlean Dent, 17, will attend her prom dressed all in red.

Better yet, she has picked out what she describes as the perfect prom gown -- and paid not one red cent.

Charlean was one of about a hundred or so high school girls to visit the elegant dress giveaway at the Elks Lodge Sunday. The girls came from as close as Flagstaff and as far as the Navajo Reservation to browse among the racks and racks of velvet, lace and beaded prom gowns on display at the Elks Lodge.

Five hundred dresses, 95 pairs of shoes, numerous scarves and even nail polish have been donated to the Elks Ladies, and in exchange for a can of food, the girls were able to walk away with a free prom set-up. With the cans of food, the Elks will put together gift baskets to give away to 100 local families in need.

"Everybody wins today," said Janice Trumpp, a member of the Elks Ladies. "The girls should be able to find the perfect dress."

"Perfect" comes in all shapes and sizes, but Charlean, a Coconino High School junior, fancies her red lace, strapless gown.

"I have never been able to wear a strapless dress, and this fits perfectly," she said. "Every girl wants to feel like a princess and putting on a prom dress makes you feel like one. I feel comfortable and pretty."

On that specific rose red number, Charlean saved a whopping $368 dollars. Adding her shawl and shoes, she saved about $60 more.

The donated dresses arrived at the Flagstaff Elks Lodge No. 499 from every corner of the United States thanks to Internet advertising, according to Trumpp. Donations arrived throughout the year from local givers, as well as those in Massachusetts, California and Washington.

One specific donation, an accidental contribution of diamond earrings, were to be handed out to one lucky girl.

"None of the girls know," Trumpp said. "We don't want to disappoint anybody and we want it to be a total surprise."

The diamond earrings landed in Flagstaff by way of Malibu, Calif. The contributor donated 11 dresses, seven pairs of shoes and a box of jewelry, inside of which were the earrings.

Trumpp said she contacted the woman to tell her about the earrings found in the jewelry box and luckily the woman consented to giving the earrings to the Elks Lodge.

"Some people are very generous," Trumpp said.

Donors aren't the only generous ones: The Elks Ladies give generously of their time to help the girls select gowns. They get a payoff, though, because they have fun doing it.

"These kids are so appreciative," Trumpp said. "They will come up and ask, 'Do I look fat?', 'Do I look skinny?' and 'Do I look good?'. It is fun being a fairy godmother.
